Tempering is a technique with which an oxide layer is formed on the steel surface when heated. This oxide layer causes the colour of the steel to change from natural steel to gold, bronze, purple and finally blue depending on the temperature.

Treating the steel mirrors with heat also reveals an optical illusion-like pattern created by the polishing technique which only becomes visible after heating the polished stainless steel.
